HorseWrap was developed and tested in cooperation with experts from SLU (the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences) and horse owners around Scandinavia. A lot of research by SLU and practical experiences show that silage is an excellent forage for horses.
Together with Sara Muhonen on Equi-Nutrition we run the website forageforhorses.com to provide advice and information based on current knowledge and research. Sara Muhonen received her postgraduate education at the Department of Animal Nutrition and Management and her Master of Science degree in agriculture (animal science) at SLU.
HorseWrap is an extra durable stretch film, specially developed and produced for wrapping horse haylage to give extra protection for puncture and wear resistance.
HorseWrap is protected against UV deterioration with a guarantee of up to 12 months. The film is produced in lighter colours to reflect heat, because the darker the colour, the more heat it absorbs from the sun. The lighter the colour, the more it reflects the sun´s radiation.
HorseWrap is suitable for all wrappers and both round & square bales and available in many different sizes to fit also the needs of special small bale businesses.
Baled silage has been increasingly popular ever since the 80s, and was mostly fed to cows. But until today baled haylage has become a superior forage solution with sustainable benefits also for a lot of horse owners!
Previously the usual way of conserving grass for horses has been to dry it into hay. But haylage is, compared with hay, a dust-free alternative that can help prevent horses developing respiratory problems and also helps to alleviate coughing symptoms due to sensitivity to dust. Therefore, in collaboration with SLU (the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences) we have developed HorseWrap, a unique stretch film for horse haylage. HorseWrap has been developed and tested in cooperation with experts from SLU and horse owners around Scandinavia. A lot of research by SLU and practical
experiences show that silage is an excellent forage for horses. Preserved forage packaged in bales is known and gets increasingly popular as feed in the horse business, both for racing and riding horses.
Dry matter in haylage aims to be higher than in usual silage, between 50-65 %. To secure highest quality under these difficult conditions, HorseWrap has an especially high puncture and tear strength and therefor a higher resistance to stalky material. In addition to that, haylage for horses is often traded over large distances because most horse owners do not have own farms or the possibility to produce their own feed. This means that the bales are put through more handling and the risk of puncture damage is increased. HorseWrap is also specially designed to fit those needs and give the feed extra protection under these special conditions.
Thanks to the high nutritional value and good palatability, silage has become a fixed component in many horse rations, and the interest in silage as alternative feed is steadily increasing in Europe. HorseWrap is specifically engineered with higher puncture and tear resistance to protect haylage bales made from stalkier plant material. This helps maintain forage quality during handling and long-distance transport, which is often common for horse forage.
The original term for all fermented forage is actually silage. Haylage is a name that has come about for silage with high dry matter content. There are no definite limits as to what constitutes silage and what constitutes haylage, but when the content of dry matter exceeds around 50%, the forage is usually referred to as haylage. As haylage contains less water than silage, less lactic acid is produced in haylage. The lactic acid bacteria need water to grow and enable the production of lactic acid to begin. Haylage is thus preserved as a result of an oxygen-free environment, and less as a result of lactic acid production.
